Science and technology are pivotal in unlocking human potential and addressing societal challenges. However, with limited infrastructure, teaching resources, and hands-on learning opportunities, students are unable to fully harness their skills and knowledge to drive innovation and contribute meaningfully to progress and development.
To close this gap, Vcare for Development Foundation (VCDF), in collaboration with Sterling Oil Exploration & Energy Production Co. Ltd. (SEEPCO), Natural Oilfield Services Limited (NOSL), and Ibom Developers FZE, partnered with the Ministries of Education of Lagos and Akwa Ibom states to launch its yearly Science Project Exhibition and Competition.
Inspired by the World Science Day theme, 2024, “Science for and with Society,” the initiative aims to inspire young learners to delve into scientific exploration and experimentation, fostering curiosity and innovation.
The initiative, which started in 2023, was upscaled as 179 schools were engaged across Education Districts I, III, &V in Lagos, involving over 4,000 students alongside 215 principals and teachers. 53 out of 87 short-listed proposals received financial and instructional support for developing their science projects.
In October, 50 schools from Lagos State competed at the district level, with 17 advancing to the finale. The Inter-District Competition, which was held on November 23, 2024, at the Lagos State Education Resource Centre, featured innovative models presented to a panel of experts and an audience of over 100 students, teachers, and volunteers, highlighting creativity, problem-solving skills, and teamwork.
Mrs. Akinfoyewa, Director of Science and Technology, Ministry of Basic & Secondary Education, who represented the Honourable Commissioner, commented, “This initiative is a remarkable step toward inspiring our students to embrace science as a tool for solving real-world challenges. It aligns perfectly with our educational goals and demonstrates the power of collaboration in nurturing innovation and excellence among young learners.”
Distinguished guests also present from the Lagos State Ministry of Basic & Secondary Education include Mr. Taiwo Aremu, Director of Admin & Human Resources, District I; Mrs. Oyegbile Oluwakemi, Director Co-curricular Science and Technology, District I and Mr. Bankole, Director of Co-curricular Science and Technology, District V.
The initiative was also unveiled in Akwa Ibom State, reaching over 1000 students from 14 secondary schools and providing resources to develop science projects. Qua Iboe Church Senior Science School, Ndon Eyo, emerged winners with their Wastewater Treatment Irrigation Prototype.
In Lagos, Sonmori Senior Comprehensive High School, Ifako-Ijaiye of District I emerged as the winner with their Smart Obstacle Walking Stick model, while Ilogbo-Elegba Senior Grammar School and Festac Senior Grammar School of District V were the first and second runners-up with their Vacuum Cleaner and Digital Waste Truck projects, respectively.
The science programme was not just a showcase of scientific concepts but also a celebration of innovation, creativity, and critical application of 21st-century skillsets. It emphasised the transformative role of science in unlocking potential and fostering solutions to societal challenges.
