Minister of Livestock Development, Idi Mukhtar-Maiha, has called on state governments to establish their various ministries of livestock development, insisting that the ministry is critical to addressing challenges in the sector.

He stated this at this year’s edition of the Continuing Education programme for veterinary professionals themed, ‘Veterinarians as policy advocates: Giving voice to animal health,’ in Abuja.

The minister, while commending states that have already established their livestock ministries, said the move is a clear demonstration of support for the presidential initiative in the establishment of the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development, stressing that setting up the ministry is a matter of urgency.

He told stakeholders that the existence of state Ministries of Livestock Development will facilitate policy coordination, programmes and actions, as well as accelerate the overall development of the sector at the national and sub-national levels.

“Nigeria aims to standardise domestic production of livestock and related products to access the global livestock markets.

“The first National Council on Livestock Development will have representations from all state Ministries of Livestock Development. Issues of livestock migration, animal health, food and water, as well as breed improvement, will be tackled expeditiously,” the minister said.

Mukhtar-Maiha revealed that in the last two weeks, Borno and Yobe have added to the list of states that have created new ministries of livestock, describing the development as very encouraging.
