Niger commences second round of newborn health week

The Niger State Government has reiterated that improving nutrition and health is a collaborative effort involving the government, families, and communities.

The Deputy Governor, Comrade Yakuba Garba made the observation during the official flag-off of the second round of the November/December 2024 Optimized Maternal Newborn and Child Health Week (MNCHW) at the Primary Health Care Center in Kafin Tela, Tudun Wada Ward of Chanchaga Local Council.

Represented by Dr. Ibrahim Ahmed Dangana, Commissioner for Primary Health Care, Garba emphasized that Umaru Bago-led administration recognizes health and nutrition as vital pillars for sustainable development within the New Niger Agenda.

Comrade Garba added. “Good nutrition and timely health-seeking behavior are essential for healthier lives, stronger communities, and a productive state.”

Highlighting the ongoing challenges of malnutrition, particularly among women and children, Garba described the flag-off as a testament to the government’s commitment to combat these issues.

This year’s MNCHW theme, “Nutritious Diets for Everyone,” emphasized the foundational role of nutrition in achieving good health and aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

He reassured that the state is committed to recruiting skilled healthcare personnel to ensure that no one, especially those in remote and underserved areas, is left behind.

He called on stakeholders to renew their commitment to prioritizing nutrition across all levels and ensuring every family in Niger State benefits from a nutritious diet.

Dr. Dangana, represented by Permanent Secretary Dr. Abdullahi Usman Imam, explained that the MNCHW is conducted annually to bridge the gap between routine health services and set targets aimed at reducing diseases affecting maternal, newborn, and child health.

He urged the public to take advantage of the free services provided during the week.

Earlier, the Chanchaga Local Government Chairman, Aminu Ladan pledged to strengthen primary healthcare systems to ensure all women and children receive the healthcare they deserve.

The week featured the administration of nutritional supplements to children aged 0-5 by Niger State Nutrition Officer, Hajiya Asmau Abubakar and the inspection of nutritional foods by various stakeholders.

There were goodwill messages from partners including ANRIN, UNICEF, WHO, YGF, PLAN International, and the Malaria Consortium, highlighting the collaborative effort towards enhancing health and nutrition in Niger State.
