Shobowale urged government to ensure regular testing and certification for teachers, a practice he noted is the standard.
The educationist also emphasized the importance of innovation in education. “Countries with better ideas succeed because they embrace innovation.”
Shobowale asked private schools to prioritise quality over profit-making, advocating for skills-based curriculum to equip students for self-reliance and societal contributions.
Chief Executive Officer (CEO), One Million Teachers, Hakeem Subair underscored the transformative power of foundational education. He emphasised the critical need for strong literacy, communication, and numeracy skills in the early years of learning, describing tertiary education as icing on the cake.
He encouraged students to embrace reading and writing as essential tools for personal and academic growth.
Earlier, President, Myschool Reconnect, Prof. Azeez Butali reaffirmed the group’s commitment to improving literacy through community focused initiatives.
He highlighted the significance of the essay competition, which has grown since its inaugural edition.
“This year’s competition involves 12 schools and 130 students, from six schools and 60 students last year. Our goal is to give back to the community by fostering literacy and academic excellence,” Butali explained.
The competition, he said, focuses on public schools while including private schools with alumni in the Myschool Reconnect community.
He charged the students to work hard and take their education seriously. “Reading and writing will lay the foundation for success tomorrow,” Butali encouraged.
The group gave out certification of participation to some students, cash gift, books, school bags to outstanding students.
