The Federal Government has converted the Marhai Forest Reserve in Nasarawa State into a national park, as part of efforts to ensure sustainable development, biodiversity conservation, and climate resilience.

The Federal Government has converted the Marhai Forest Reserve in Nasarawa State into a national park, as part of efforts to ensure sustainable development, biodiversity conservation, and climate resilience.

Speaking during the handover ceremony in Lafia, the Minister of Environment, Balarabe Lawal, said the event is a practical demonstration of cooperative federalism, where the federal and state governments come together to secure a sustainable future for the next generations.

“This demonstrates a shared commitment to natural conservation that transcends political boundaries, as well as underscores an unwavering dedication to safeguarding the environment and making the world a better place,” Lawal said.

The minister explained that the Marhai Forest Reserve holds a delicate balance that sustains life and provides crucial ecosystem services, adding that it will serve as a sanctuary for numerous wildlife species such as birds, amphibians, mammals and fishes.

“The famous Farin Ruwa waterfalls is located at the park which will undoubtedly become an ecotourism hotspot attracting visitors from across the globe. It is an excellent opportunity to showcase the natural beauty and cultural diversity of the Nigerian landscape.”

He said the journey of upgrading the National Parks began in 2011 and the challenges associated with the effective management of National Parks have been addressed. “We are ready to engage key stakeholders at local and international levels to secure and safeguard our parks by collaborating with the National Security Adviser, and Armed Forces to enhance the capacity of rangers, forest and game guards,” Lawal said.

The State Governor, Abdullahi Sule described it as a historic event and a significant milestone in their collective efforts to preserve Nasarawa State’s natural heritage and promote sustainable environmental stewardship for the benefit of current and future generations.

Sule also explained that the development came when they inaugurated a Technical Transition Committee for the smooth conversion of Marhai Forest Reserve to a National Park, as they believe in the National Parks Service’s proven track record of managing protected areas across the country.

“Marhai National Park is located in Wamba local council, a jewel in the rich tapestry of our state’s biodiversity. Its unique ecosystems, diverse wildlife, and scenic landscapes have always been a source of pride for our people,” he added.
