Professional boxing took centre stage at the latest edition of Chaos in the Ring, with Suleiman Jafaru, Yusuf Adeniji and Basil “Joker Boy” Adebayo emerging as some of the biggest winners on a night that mixed serious competition with celebrity drama.
Held at the Balmoral Convention Centre, Federal Palace Hotel, Victoria Island, Lagos, the event brought together professional fighters, entertainers and boxing fans for a night of knockouts, closely fought contests and plenty of action inside and outside the ring.
Adebayo was among the first fighters to make a strong impression. He stopped Said Mohamed Hassan in the second round, ending the contest much earlier than expected.
Speaking after the fight, Adebayo said he had prepared thoroughly and was ready to go the distance if necessary.
“I prepared for this fight, and I was determined,” he said, adding that his sights were set on becoming one of Nigeria’s leading boxing stars.
Yusuf Adeniji also delivered a convincing performance against Rilwan Lawal in their super-featherweight bout. Unlike Adebayo’s early finish, their contest went the distance, with Adeniji earning a unanimous decision after a solid display throughout.
However, one of the biggest moments of the night belonged to Suleiman Jafaru, who secured a knockout victory over former British super-welterweight champion Samuel Antwi.
The victory came with rewards beyond the result itself. Jafaru was handed a professional contract after the fight and also received an electric vehicle from one of the event’s sponsors, rounding off what was undoubtedly a memorable night for the boxer.
Elsewhere, Michael Babatola maintained his unbeaten professional record with a unanimous decision victory over Abidemi Rabiu, while Shiloh “Sugar Shy” Defeitas defeated Ghana’s Eric “Kojo” Quarm on points.
Babalola’s victory comes from the support of Bank of Industry (BOI), where he was able to make the transition into the professional ranks, winning his debut and continuing to build his career. His journey reflects the kind of pathway Chaos in the Ring is seeking to create: identifying talent at the grassroots, providing the support required to take the next step and allowing promising athletes to build sustainable careers in professional boxing.
The celebrity fights also delivered the kind of drama Chaos in the Ring has become known for.
The much-anticipated rematch between singer Portable and actor Charles Okocha ended controversially after Portable was disqualified, leaving Okocha to be declared the winner.
Meanwhile, musicians Mr Real and Idowest could not be separated after five rounds, with their contest ending in a draw. Organisers announced that both men would return to the ring for a rematch on October 1.
Speaking on the vision behind the event, Dr Ezekiel Adamu, founder of Chaos in the Ring and Group Managing Director of Balmoral Group, said the platform was created to provide African boxing talent with greater opportunities to showcase themselves.
While the celebrity bouts generated plenty of excitement, the night ultimately belonged to the fighters who delivered when it mattered. For Jafaru, Adeniji and Adebayo, their performances provided some of the strongest sporting moments of an event where boxing and entertainment once again shared the spotlight.
