Governor Hyacinth Alia of Benue State has launched Operation ‘Anyam Nyor,’ a decisive initiative aimed at addressing the state’s lingering security challenges and setting it on a path to prosperity.

Benue, long hailed as Nigeria’s food basket, was marred by years of insecurity before Governor Alia assumed office on 29 May 2023. From violent clashes between herders and farmers to deadly attacks by gunmen, the state grappled with an unrelenting wave of violence that crippled its agricultural sector and deterred potential investors.

A Commitment to Safety

Since taking office, Governor Alia has made security a cornerstone of his administration. On Saturday, 14 December 2024, he officially launched the Benue State Civil Protection Guards (BSCPG), comprising 5,000 personnel, at an event held at IBB Square in Makurdi.

The initiative was marked by the donation of 100 Hilux vehicles and 600 special combat motorcycles to security agencies. This is part of a broader strategy to safeguard lives and property while fostering an environment conducive to economic growth and investment.

“As governor of Benue State, I am aware of my duty to protect the lives and property of our people,” said Alia during the event. “We cannot build a prosperous state upon insecurity. My commitment to ensuring the safety of every Benue resident is firm, as security remains my top priority.”

Revamping Security Infrastructure

The BSCPG is a legally established security outfit designed to combat criminality and ensure a safe environment for residents. The governor praised the 5,000 recruits for their dedication to service, urging them to uphold professionalism and ethics in their duties.

Operation ‘Anyam Nyor,’ which translates to “moving forward,” also unveiled a Joint Security Task Force to bolster existing security frameworks. Alia described the initiative as a “decisive step forward” in the fight against insecurity.

Transforming Agriculture and Infrastructure

Beyond security, Governor Alia has prioritised reviving Benue’s agricultural and infrastructural sectors. Under his administration, the state has doubled its subsidised fertiliser distribution from 100 to 200 trucks and introduced subsidies for seeds, agrochemicals, and farming equipment.

This renewed focus extends to infrastructure, with significant road projects underway to enhance intrastate connectivity and support agricultural activities. “We are committed to boosting agricultural productivity in Benue State, enabling farmers to achieve bountiful harvests and sustainable growth,” the governor said.

Collaboration for Economic Growth

Governor Alia has also sought partnerships with the Central Bank of Nigeria and development finance institutions to fund large-scale projects, including agricultural mechanisation, industrial parks, and special economic zones.

“Benue is known for producing crops like soybeans, rice, and yams in abundance,” Alia said. “Enhancing food production will create jobs along the value chain and help reduce food inflation, benefiting the entire country.”

Widespread Applause

Residents and political observers have lauded Governor Alia’s transformative agenda. A Makurdi resident remarked, “Benue has never witnessed this kind of transformation on all fronts. The people made the right decision entrusting Rev Father Alia with their future in 2023.”

From tackling security challenges to revitalising agriculture and infrastructure, Governor Alia’s efforts have been described as deliberate, targeted, and people-focused.

A Call for Unity

Governor Alia’s strides have inspired calls for bipartisan support to sustain these developmental initiatives. “We urge politicians across party lines to join hands with this God-fearing governor to build a safe, secure, and prosperous Benue for all,” a political analyst noted.

With Operation ‘Anyam Nyor’ and other progressive initiatives, Governor Alia is charting a bold path for Benue State, ensuring it lives up to its reputation as the nation’s food basket.
