Lagos State Government has raised concerns over a growing trend of overcrowding in numerous clubs and lounges across the state during the festive season.

The state government, while highlighting the associated safety risks, therefore, urged the nightclub owners and other hospitality venue operators to strictly adhere to the government-approved occupancy limits.

Lagos State Safety Commission Director-General, Lanre Mojola, in a statement, yesterday, said that while the commission fully supports the thriving nightlife and its economic benefits, it is crucial for all establishments to adhere to the authorised occupancy limits set by the commission.

The DG, who stressed the significant safety risks associated with overcrowding, including fire hazards, smoking in public spaces, blocked emergency exits, and an increased likelihood of accidents, said that these dangers put not only patrons at risk but also staff members and the public.

He said that the measures put in place were essential to ensuring the safety and well-being of everyone involved.

Mojola said the commission had begun conducting thorough inspections to ensure compliance with the regulations.

He warned that any establishment found violating the safety guidelines would face immediate closure and may be subjected to further legal action.

The DG, however, expressed appreciation for the cooperation of all stakeholders in maintaining a safe and enjoyable environment for all, saying: “Let us work together to keep Lagos safe and thriving.”
