Activities marking the 80th anniversary celebration of Government College Ughelli (GCU) will hold on Friday January 17, 2025. The event will witness award ceremony for past icons and heroes of GCU, including its Sporting greats.
According to organisers of the event, those to be honoured are not only for academic excellence but individuals who excelled in key sporting events like cricket, athletics and football.
From its birth place in Warri to the permanent home, Government College Ughelli, founded in 1945, has produced numerous sportsmen, both for state and country with credible podium placements leading to the Olympics.
Among former stars of the college is Larry Omo Imoekor, who served as a fitting figure that stride across the sports and the generation of Old Boys between the ancient mariners and younger Mariners. The United States-based ancient mariner excelled both in cricket and football in the early seventies.
Noted for his left footed play in football, Imoekor featured prominently in the squad that had Olisa Agbakoba (SAN), Benjy Binitie and Efe Akpoguma. They were coached by Dr. BJ Itsueli.
Imoekor’s support for the school’s progress has been legendary, including the Government College Ughelli Cricket Club, ensuring that Lagos State participates regularly in the Club Cricket Committee League, and his contributions towards the 80th anniversary activities.
Before Imoekor was made the chairman of GCU 80th anniversary planning committee, Clement Djebah had set the ship afloat.
Also, past President Generals Worldwide, Prof. Oritsegbemi Omatete, Chief J.J. Akpieyi and Arc. O.C Majoroh provided the desired support alongside the current President General, Olorogun Albert Akpomudje (SAN).
While the Branches and Classes of GCU are mandated to support the historic event, individuals have since joined the fray, including the regular supporters of the college cause such as Ese and Spencer Onosode, Peter Odjoji, Ufuoma Ekpruke, Okosubide Mozimo, Gregs Thomopulos, Okeroghene Osiawa, Prof. F.I. Opute, Lumumba Okgbawa, Robert Numa and Urhobo Pride Development initiative.
