Ibadan stampede: Court to rule on bail request of Ooni’s ex-wife, others January 13

Naomi Silekunola

Justice K. B Olawoyin presiding over Court 8, Oyo State High Court, Ring Road, Ibadan, yesterday, fixed January 13 to deliver his ruling on the bail applications filed by Olori Naomi Silekunola, Alhaji Oriyomi Hamzat and Abdulahi Fasasi.

Olori Naomi is the ex-wife of the Ooni of Ife, Hamzat is the proprietor of an Ibadan-based radio station, Agidigbo FM, while Fasasi is the Principal of Islamic High School, Bashorun, Ibadan.

The bail applications were heard yesterday at the court premises. Their counsel had filed a summons of application for bail before the court. Justice Olawoyin, after entertaining arguments of parties in the suit, adjourned the ruling to January 13.

The defendants are being remanded at the Nigerian Correctional Centre, Agodi.  Fasasi was represented by Waheed Olajide, ex-queen Naomi was represented by Musibau Adetunmbi (SAN), and Hamzat was represented by Adekunle Sobaloju (SAN).

The case was argued separately by the lawyers over five hours. The state had also filed a counter-application against the bail request.

The state’s legal team, led by the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Abiodun Aikomo, had other top officials of the ministry.  All the counsel, in their separate arguments, told the court why their clients should be allowed to enjoy their freedom, stating that there was no sufficient evidence before the court to warrant the confinement to prison custody.
