Former Governor of Anambra State and the Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 general election, Peter Obi, has reaffirmed his commitment to educational development while celebrating the formal opening of the University on the Niger in Umunya, Anambra State.

Speaking at the event hosted by Rt. Rev. Dr. Owen Nwokolo, Obi described the institution as a “symbol of progress and hope,” underscoring education as the cornerstone for national development. Writing on his X-handle, he indicated that the university, established by the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion), owes part of its existence to policies implemented by Obi during his tenure as governor.

Reflecting on the early stages of the project, Obi revealed how his administration returned mission schools to their original owners, a move that cleared the path for the church’s expansion into higher education.

“I vividly recall engaging the people of Umunya to allow the church to retain this land for educational purposes,” Obi said. “We relocated the NYSC camp to Mbaukwu and followed it up with an initial donation of N50 million to support the university’s development.”

The event drew notable dignitaries, including Most Rev. Dr. Henry Ndukuba, Primate of All Nigeria; Prof. Chinedu Nebo, Vice Chancellor; and Chief Osita Chidoka, Chairman and Director of Site Completion.

Addressing students, Obi stressed the transformative power of education, urging them to embrace learning as a tool for national growth.

“Education is the greatest investment we can make to secure our future,” he stated. “Through collective efforts like this, we can build a New Nigeria that works for everyone.”

The opening of the University on the Niger signals not just another addition to Nigeria’s higher education landscape but also a legacy of faith-inspired development and community partnership. With Obi pledging continued support, stakeholders hope the institution will emerge as a hub for academic excellence and innovation.
