The arrest followed an investigation initiated by the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in Igbesa after Joseph reported the incident on January 10, 2025, at about 10:00 a.m., accompanied by his brother.
Joseph narrated that on January 4, 2025, while waiting by the river in Iyana-Ishasi, six men ambushed him. He was unable to identify their exact origin. One of the assailants threatened him with a locally made pistol and a jackknife, forcing him into a boat, which took him to a house in Itekun, near Igbesa.
While in captivity, Joseph was beaten and robbed of his belongings, including his phone. Two separate transactions totalling N356,000 were made to a BST PoS (Point of Sale) account, and a further withdrawal from his bank account amounted to N310,300, bringing the total stolen amount to N666,300.
Despite his pleas for release, the kidnappers refused to let him go. However, Joseph managed to escape and sought medical treatment at a hospital. Following the report, the DPO led a patrol team to Itekun Village, where the crime occurred. The team was able to identify and arrest one suspect, who confessed to the crime and named the leader of the group.
Meanwhile, another suspect, Gamina Solomon, identified as the ringleader, remains at large, along with the other accomplices.
“Efforts are underway to apprehend the remaining suspects, and the case will be forwarded to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Eleweran after preliminary investigations. Further updates will be provided as they arise,” the police said.
Also, in a disturbing incident, a 27-year-old motorcyclist, Ahmed Owolabi, was brutally attacked by his passenger, Sherif Oyeniyi, in Arepo, Ogun State.

The incident occurred on Wednesday, January 11, 2025, at approximately 4:15 p.m. According to CSP Omolola Odutola, the spokesperson for the Ogun State Police Command, Owolabi was transporting Oyeniyi to his residence in Orange Estate, Arepo, when the suspect suddenly attacked him with a razor blade. The vicious assault resulted in severe deep cuts to Owolabi’s neck.
Alerted to the situation, the DPO of Wawa Police Station swiftly intervened. The DPO successfully rescued Owolabi, preventing further blood loss, and immediately transported him to a nearby hospital for medical treatment.
Oyeniyi was subsequently arrested and taken into custody for questioning. During interrogation, the suspect displayed no remorse for his actions and made disturbing claims. He attributed the attack to the influence of a “voodoo doctor” he had consulted earlier. When questioned about the purpose of the consultation, Oyeniyi stated that it was “the devil’s handiwork.”
