Mutfwang mourns as ex-FCT minister, Lt. Gen Useni, dies at 82

The Governor of Plateau State, Barr. Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, has announced the passing of Lt. General Jeremiah Timbut Useni (retd.), a former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

General Useni passed away on Thursday, January 23, 2025, at the age of 82, after a prolonged illness.

Governor Mutfwang, in a statement by his Director of Press and Public Affairs, Gyang Bere, described General Useni’s death as a significant loss to his family, Plateau State, the Nigerian Armed Forces, and the entire nation.

He praised the late General’s exemplary leadership, unwavering commitment to service, and tireless efforts to promote peace and security, particularly in Northern Nigeria and Plateau State.

“General Useni’s contributions to Nigeria’s security and political development have left an indelible mark,” the governor stated, stressing his remarkable career in public service.

General Useni served Nigeria with distinction in various capacities, including as Minister of Transport, Quarter-Master General of the Nigerian Army, and Minister of the FCT. After retiring from the military, he ventured into politics, where he served as Deputy Chairman of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) and later as Senator representing Plateau South Senatorial District under the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in 2015.

Mutfwang lauded the late General’s life of selfless service, noting his profound contributions to the military, politics, and his community.

He described Useni as a compassionate, kind, and generous leader whose legacy would continue to inspire many.

“On behalf of my family, the government, and the peace-loving people of Plateau State, I extend my deepest sympathies to the President, the Nigerian Armed Forces, the immediate family, and all those mourning this tremendous loss,” the Governor said.

He offered prayers for God’s comfort and strength for the bereaved family, Plateau State, and the nation during this challenging time.

The governor also encouraged all citizens to honour the memory of the late General by emulating his dedication to service, unity, and nation-building.
