The National Agency For Food and Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has expressed concerns over the alarming drug abuse among secondary school students.
While addressing students of the Government Girls Secondary School, Rumukwuta in Port Harcourt, the capital of Rivers, the Director-General of NAFDAC, Mojisola Adeyeye, represented by the South-South Zonal Coordinator NAFDAC, Oligbu Chukwuma, said that secondary schools had become grooming centers for drug abuse.
In 2024, The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) revealed that over 14 million people misuse drugs.

Adeyeye described drug abuse as a menace which Nigerians have become victims for.
She added that the increasing spate of drug abuse in the country is a result of the increasing crime rate and low productivity in the country.
According to Adeyeye, drug abuse among secondary school students has far-reaching consequences, such as poor academic performance and absenteeism.
The DG also charged students of the school to shun drug abuse and be good ambassadors of NAFDAC to the school and society at large.
