Rights groups petition IGP over inconclusive probe into murder case

The International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) Nigeria, the Akin Fadeyi Foundation (AFF), and the Women’s Rights Advancement and Protection Alternative (WRAPA) have jointly petitioned the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr Kayode Egbetokun, urging the release of findings from the investigation into the death of 33-year-old Fidelis Osaghae.

Osaghae, a father of one and manager at the Angle 90 branch of Valchi Fast Food and Bar in Auchi, Edo State, died on July 29, 2024, under suspicious circumstances.

The groups lauded the IGP for his initial intervention following AFF’s petition but expressed concern that the investigation report has not been made public, while alleged suspects remain free.

The petition, signed by AFF’s Executive Director, Mr Akin Fadeyi; FIDA’s National President, Elina Martins; and WRAPA’s Secretary General, Saudatu Mahdi, called for a thorough, transparent, and prompt probe into the case. It also demanded the arrest and prosecution of all suspects connected to Osaghae’s death.

The rights groups raised doubts about the autopsy report, describing it as inconclusive and potentially flawed.

They noted the report failed to address critical injuries on Osaghae’s body, such as a broken head and scalp, which they argue are indicative of foul play. They called for an independent post-mortem examination to uncover the true cause of death.

Highlighting inconsistencies in the autopsy, the groups questioned the unexplored presence of dark patches on Osaghae’s chest, which they argued could suggest physical restraint or blunt force trauma. They also criticised the report for neglecting to explain bloodstains on the deceased’s trousers or examine his hands and fingernails for defensive wounds.

The petition further alleged that the autopsy may have been compromised, with critical evidence suppressed to obscure the cause of death.

The groups emphasised the need for a toxicological re-evaluation to determine whether poisoning played a role, including whether it was chronic or acute.

The organisations called on the police to act swiftly to ensure justice, asserting that an independent forensic review is crucial to addressing lingering doubts and holding those responsible accountable.
