Gunmen suspected to be kidnappers have killed a health worker a few meters from Akure airport in Eleyowo, Akure North Local Government Area of Ondo State.

The deceased, Akinola Oyabiyi, was waylaid by his killers while driving home at around 8:00 pm on Wednesday.

According to sources, Oyabiyi, 46, a father of four, drove into the gunmen, who immediately opened fire on him, which subsequently claimed his life after he was rushed to the hospital.

The Guardian reports that a few days ago, gunmen suspected to be herders shot dead five farmers in Ajegunle-Powerline in the Akure North LGA, with the perpetrators yet to be apprehended.

Over 13 persons have also been abducted within the council in the last two weeks, with tension gradually building up in the state, particularly within the Akure metropolis.

Meanwhile, a family source, who craved anonymity, stated that Oyabiyi was shot in the stomach by his killers.

She said, “He (Oyabiyi) was shot by gunmen when he was driving home. He ran into them very close to the airport. The bullets hit him in the stomach.

“He was rushed to the hospital, but he died, and he was later taken to the mortuary.”

Meanwhile, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in the state, CSP Funmilayo Odunlami-Omisanya, confirmed the incident, stressing that the command’s tactical teams are on the trail of the assailants.

She said, “We urge family members of victims to please endeavour to report such incident(s) as it happens.”
