Lagos State Governor, Babakide Sanwo-Olu, has promised to support the Lagos Food Bank Initiative (LFBI) in reducing hunger in the country.
Sanwo-Olu stated this in Lagos at the launch of a new food warehouse, the third since the founding of the initiative in *2016* by Dr Michael Sunbola.
Represented by the Commissioner for Agriculture, Ms Abisola Olusanya, the governor lauded the LFBI team, noting its dedication as inspiring and the work as a beacon of hope.
He added, “Your tireless efforts to serve those in need do not go unnoticed, and as a government, we are committed to supporting initiatives like yours. Beyond today, we are taking concrete steps to boost local food production, improve logistics, and strengthen social safety nets to ensure that no Lagosian is left behind.
“As we cut the ribbon today, let it symbolise more than just the opening of a warehouse. Let it stand as a testament to our shared commitment, a reminder that Lagos is not only a city of commerce and industry but also a city of compassion and community.”
Wife of the governor, Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, in her good will message, appealed to well-meaning and public-spirited Nigeria to partner with LFBI to realise its objective.
In the message delivered by *Dr Laja Odunuga,* the first also encouraged young boys and girls to engage in farming to ensure food security, stressing the state’s commitment to home gardening.
Dr Sunbola traced his journey to founding LFBI, which ninth anniversary was on February 14, recalling that it was never part of his life’s dream.
Affirming the popular saying, “man proposes and God disposes,” he said God enkindled the fire of establishing the food bank, which was inspired by the Houston Food Bank, in him on February 14, *2016.*
“I used to be self-centred, but with LFBI, God delivered me,” he said at the launch.
The Guardian gathered that LFBI has over 20,000 volunteers, who help in the packaging and distribution of food to needy communities.
In her Opening Speech, the Human Resources Performance Management Officr, Sophie N-Iyare.l, affirmed the launch as a milestone.
She added, “ This milestone is not just about expanding our storage space; it is about expanding our impact. It is about ensuring that no child goes to bed hungry, no family has to struggle for its next meal and no community has to face food insecurity alone.”
There were testimonies from volunteers who had been with the initiative right from inception.
