Lagos warns motorists against fake vehicle ID numbers

The Lagos State Government has cautioned motorists to desist from the use of fraudulent vehicle identification numbers and hiding their registration plates.

This warning was issued by the state governor’s special adviser on transportation, Sola Giwa, on behalf of the Lagos State Government.

While speaking on the Lagos State Government’s stance on this illegal practice, the governor’s aide noted that the use of fraudulent vehicle identification numbers is a violation of traffic laws.

He added that this practice is concerning as it poses grave security risks to the state.

Giwa said, “The Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law, 2018, unequivocally mandates the proper display of Vehicle Identification Numbers on all automobiles traversing the state’s road network.

“Just as every individual bears a name beyond their choice, so too does every vehicle possess an assigned number plate, which must be displayed without obstruction.”

He further noted that the use of fake vehicle identification numbers also makes it hard for security agencies and traffic enforcement officers to trace vehicles involved in criminal activities such as “One-Chance” robberies and other traffic violations.

To make it easy for security agencies and traffic enforcement officers to discharge their responsibilities, Giwa implored motorists in the state to immediately remove any coverings from their number plates and cease using fake identification numbers for their vehicles.

He warned that failure to comply with this directive will attract prosecution.
