Six arraigned over alleged theft, diversion of N142m diesel in Lagos

Six men have been arraigned before the Lagos Magistrate’s Court sitting in Yaba on charges of conspiracy, stealing, and diverting 145 litres of Automated Gas Oil (diesel) valued at N142 million.

The defendants, identified as Olugbode Abayomi, 55; Ahmad Abdullahi, 38; Yahaya Musa, 58; Abdullahi Muhammadu, 52; Ibrahim Halihu, 45; and Adamu Muhammed, 58, appeared before Chief Magistrate Eniola Kubeinje.

According to the prosecuting counsel, Mr Morufu Animashaun, who was assisted by A. O. Okunuga of the Force Criminal Investigation Department (ForceCID) Annex, Alagbon-Ikoyi, Lagos, the offences were committed on January 26 and 27, 2025, at about 1:00 p.m. at the Dangote Refinery in Ibeju Lekki, Lagos State.

Animashaun stated that the diesel, which allegedly belongs to Mr Bolaji Animashaun, was stolen and diverted by the defendants. He added that their actions violated Sections 411 and 280, and are punishable under Section 287(5) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015.

The defendants pleaded not guilty to the charges. Following their plea, their lawyer, I. K. Abdulsalam, applied for their bail, requesting that the court grant bail under liberal terms.

Magistrate Kubeinje admitted each defendant to bail in the sum of N10 million with two responsible sureties in like sum. The sureties are required to reside within the court’s jurisdiction and provide evidence of three years’ tax payment as well as proof of livelihood.

The defendants were ordered to remain in the custody of the Nigerian Correctional Services (NCoS) until their bail conditions are met.

The case was adjourned to April 23, 2025, for mention.
