The Delta State government has pledged full support for the implementation of agreements between host communities and oil companies, in line with the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA), 2021.
Deputy Governor Sir Monday Onyeme gave the assurance at a weekend sensitisation workshop on the PIA, organised by the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) in collaboration with Mecco and Marine Holdings Ltd for host communities in Ndokwa East Local Government Area.
Onyeme, represented by the Deputy Chief of Staff, Sir Christopher Osakwe, said while the PIA is not a perfect document, the state government would continue to promote peace and a harmonious working relationship between host communities and oil companies. He warned that any attempt to shortchange host communities would not be tolerated.
He also urged host communities to safeguard oil facilities in their areas to ensure continued access to the three per cent fund allocated to them under the PIA.
Addressing participants, NUPRC Chief Executive Officer Gbenga Komolafe, represented by Mr Akpotowho Kennedy, described the PIA as a turning point in efforts to achieve sustainable development in oil-producing areas. He stressed the vital role host communities play in Nigeria’s oil and gas sector, noting that their resources have significantly contributed to national economic growth.
Consultant to the NUPRC and CEO of Mecco and Marine Holdings Ltd, Chief George Bucknor, said the workshop aimed to educate host communities on their entitlements under Sections 234 and 240 of the Act, as opposed to Section 257(2), and to ensure compliance with Chapter 3 of the law.
Bucknor added that the session also aimed to encourage timely and accurate reporting of non-compliance by Host Community Development Trusts or settlors.
Traditional rulers, including the Obi of Aboh, His Imperial Majesty Dr Gregory Nnamdi Oputa III, lauded the initiative and promised to ensure the protection of oil infrastructure within their domains.
