FG backs Katsina’s bid to take over 10MW wind farm

The Federal Government, through the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has expressed readiness to support Katsina State’s move to take over the 10-megawatt wind farm located in the state, with plans to expand its capacity through the integration of solar energy.

Governor Dikko Umar Radda disclosed the state’s interest during a strategic dialogue with the Minister of Power in Abuja. The meeting was part of efforts to strengthen federal-state collaboration in advancing sustainable electricity access nationwide.

The Katsina State Government, in partnership with Genesis Energy, is seeking to assume control of the wind farm, originally built by the Federal Government as part of a broader initiative to improve energy supply by hybridising the facility with solar power.

While outlining the state’s energy vision, Radda noted that the transition aligns with the state’s commitment to exploring renewable energy solutions to meet growing electricity demands.

Adelabu welcomed the governor’s request, describing the initiative as timely and in line with the Electricity Act 2023, which empowers sub-national governments to develop and manage electricity within their jurisdictions.

He commended the governor for his proactive approach to power development, emphasising that improved electricity supply will not only enhance the quality of life but also stimulate economic growth and development in the region.

“The initiative is consistent with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu, which prioritises universal energy access and the economic empowerment of all Nigerians through reliable and sustainable power supply,” the minister said.

He assured the governor of the Federal Government’s full support in ensuring a seamless concession process and effective technical cooperation between the Ministry of Power and the state government.

He added that the importance of improved electricity supply cannot be overstated, noting that it enhances the quality of life and unlocks socio-economic growth.

He assured Radda of the Federal Government’s readiness to collaborate with the state government to ensure a seamless concession process for the wind farm and to support the state’s ambition to scale up electricity delivery for its people.
