Again, Kano uncovers 240 workers drawing double salaries

The Kano State government has discovered a fresh scam in its civil service, with 240 workers receiving double salaries from the payroll.

Before the latest revelation, the state government had uncovered 247 ghost workers on the local government payroll who were either retired or dead.

Briefing journalists on the ongoing verification and validation exercise of the state payroll system, the chairman of the state payroll, Dr. Auwal Sanda, revealed that 217 staff were discovered using the same Bank Verification Number (BVN).

He added that 1,335 workers whose names appeared on the payroll have refused to report for verification.

Sanda reminded that while the committee was not in a hurry to declare them as ghost workers, the affected persons would still be given the opportunity to appear for the biodata capturing and verification to clear their names.

Revealing similar atrocities at the local government level, the chairman of the payroll verification committee, Alhaji Umaru Idi, stressed that 679 staff whose names appear on the payroll have failed to appear for capturing.

Secretary to the State Government, Umar Ibrahim Faruq, expressed concern over the number of civil servants indebted to private loan vendors.

According to the SSG, the government disburses over N19 billion monthly to service loans owed by 21,000 workers, predominantly teachers in public schools.
