Edo govt warns against cult violence as six die in renewed clashes

The Edo State government has expressed concern over the resurgence of cult-related violence in parts of the state, urging security agencies to act decisively in apprehending those responsible for recent killings.

Bugie Okhuemoi, Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to Governor Monday Okpebholo, issued a statement yesterday in Benin, highlighting the government’s commitment to restoring peace.

“The state government is deeply troubled by the resurgence of cult-related violence. Last year, Governor Okpebholo personally convened meetings with leaders of suspected groups, where agreements were made to curb these activities. Unfortunately, recent events show that some individuals have chosen to defy these understandings,” the statement read.

Okpebholo has directed security agencies to enforce the Edo State Anti-Cultism and Kidnapping Law without exception, vowing that those testing the will of the state will face justice.

The administration reiterated its commitment to eliminating cultism and criminality in Edo State, urging residents to remain calm as security operatives intensify efforts to restore order.

In recent days, at least six people have reportedly been killed in cult-related violence across Benin City. Among the victims was a member of the Edo State Security Network, who was fatally shot at Ibiwe Street in Oredo Local Council.

Another victim, 42-year-old realtor Umweni Joel Isibor, was killed at his shop in the 2nd Ugbor area after being trailed from church. Deputy Governor Dennis Idahosa visited the family of Isibor, condemning the act and promising justice. “Governor Okpebholo and the state government are deeply saddened by this murder.”

We will not rest until the perpetrators are apprehended,” Idahosa said, warning criminal elements to leave Edo State or face the full force of the law. Wife of the deceased, Mrs Joel Isibor, described her husband’s death as a heinous crime, appealing to the government for a thorough investigation. “My husband was ambushed while locking his shop. He was killed without provocation,” she lamented, adding that her family was devastated by the loss of its breadwinner.

The state police spokesperson, CSP Moses Yamu, had not responded to inquiries at press time.
