Over 190 physically challenged candidates sit for UTME in Lagos, Kano

No fewer than 193 physically challenged candidates sat for the just-concluded 2025 University Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) in centres across Lagos and Kano states.

To make the 2025 UTME seamless, the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) created 11 specialised centres for physically challenged candidates nationwide. Some of these centres were situated in Lagos, Ogun and Kano states.

In Lagos, 101 physically challenged candidates sat for the exam. The Kano centre, on the other hand, had about 92 visually impaired candidates.

The examination for physically challenged candidates in Lagos held for two days at the Distance Learning Institute of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), while those in Kano sat for theirs at the at School of Continuing Education, Bayero University Kano (BUK), under the JAMB Equal Opportunity Group (JEOG) for special needs candidates.

A former vice chancellor of BUK, Yahuza-Bello, said the candidates in the Kano centre were drawn from Kano, Jigawa, Katsina, Zamfara, and Kaduna States.

He added that out of the 92 candidates, two have Down Syndrome, while two others have autism.

They were given various gadgets to aid their examination, such as typewriters, braille machines, slates, styluses, and paper.

While speaking on how JAMB eased the challenges of the physically challenged candidates in Lagos, the Coordinator of the Lagos Centre comprising Lagos and Ogun States, Professor Lanre Fagbohun, noted that the board provided for the transportation and accommodation of the candidates.

“From the evening of arrival of the special candidates and their one accompanying guide each, they are ushered into their hotel rooms already arranged for them ahead of their arrival and they are served dinner all at the expense of JAMB,” said Fagbohun.

“Transport and logistics between their hotel rooms and the examination centre and other logistics are also fully borne by JAMB-JEOG. It is also worth mentioning that even possible health emergency development is foreseen and an ambulance vehicle is also on standby.”

He further noted that they were given required aiding facilities depending on the candidate’s challenge.
