IAWPA honours Oniye as global peace advocate for maritime development

The International Association of World Peace Advocates (IAWPA), a United Nations Peace Volunteers body, has conferred the President of the Merchant Seafarers Association of USA Inc. and Nigeria, Prof. Alfred Oniye, with the Chartered Fellowship Award for Eminent Peace Ambassador.

The prestigious recognition, sealed and signed by the World Peace President of IAWPA, Ambassador Per Stafsen, was conferred following Oniye’s nomination and subsequent approval by the global body headquartered in Denmark.

The Chartered Fellowship Award was presented during the 2025 Investiture Ceremony of International Peace Advocates, held on April 24, 2025.

Presenting the award, the Chief Nominee Superintendent and a director of the Association, Dr. Jerry Abiye, said the appointment recognises Oniye’s outstanding contributions to peacebuilding, human capital development, and maritime industry advancement.

Abiye explained that as an Eminent Peace Ambassador, Oniye is now empowered to carry out peace advocacy across the world under the framework of the United Nations’ 1984 Declaration on the Right of Peoples to Peace.

He highlighted Oniye’s impressive contributions to peace, education and human capital development, especially in the maritime sector, as key reasons for his nomination.

Abiye noted that Oniye’s reputation and long-standing service to humanity made him a natural choice for the honour without the need for a rigorous vetting process, categorising him among the elite “Category A” nominees.

“Oniye is a man of many paths; his impact on the maritime industry, education, and leadership is immeasurable.

He has touched countless lives and remains a beacon of excellence and service,” he stated.

Abiye said that with his new designation, Oniye now holds the privilege of participating in United Nations programmes and global peace conferences and is expected to lead delegations of the Association to high-level engagements with international organisations such as the International Maritime Organisation (IMO).
