An elder statesman and former Secretary-General of the Commonwealth, Emeka Anyaoku; a group of leaders of thought, statesmen and women in Nigeria, have announced that they will hold a political summit in Lagos State to seek a new democratic constitution.
They said that at the summit, scheduled to hold today, May 1, 2025, in Lagos, Anyaoku would unveil a high-level committee members to coordinate the proposed national political summit scheduled to hold on May 28 and 29, 2025.
According to a statement, yesterday, by the joint secretariat of The Patriots and Nigerian Political Summit Group (NPSG), initiators of the national summit, the pan-Nigerian confab is being put together to x-ray and chart a new course for Nigeria’s constitutional democracy.
The statement noted that the national summit became imperative, especially as stakeholders responded and intervened in the heightened insecurity and instability in parts of the country.
The conveners also noted that the national summit, tagged, “Actualising A Constitutional Democracy That Works For All in Nigeria,” is designed to galvanise national consensus on the most suitable and inclusive governance construct and architecture for political cohesion and stability of Nigeria.
According to them, the summit will also explore the ongoing constitution reform process of the Nigerian government as a veritable vista for actualising the popular yearnings of Nigerians for a new democratic people’s constitution capable of neutralising internal disharmony and separatist insecurity that account for massive loss of lives and wanton destructions in the country.
The statement further announced the composition of the summit coordinating committee to include former Governor of Ogun State, Gbenga Daniel, as a co-Chairman; former Speaker, House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal as co-Chairman; former Governor of Adamawa State, Boni Haruna, as a member, and former Governor of Cross River State, Donald Duke as a member, among others.
