The Ondo State Police Command has trained 160 personnel in intelligence gathering to enhance the state’s security architecture.
The operatives, drawn from police divisions and formations across the state, participated in the three-day training themed “Basic Intelligence Course”.
The Commissioner of Police in Ondo State, Wilfred Afolabi, stated that under his leadership, the command prioritises intelligence gathering to address security challenges.
Speaking at the training’s opening session, Afolabi underscored the importance of intelligence gathering and firmness in maintaining peace within the state.
He noted that the training would equip personnel to bridge existing gaps, rebuild public trust, and improve the overall security structure in communities across the state’s 18 local councils. According to Afolabi, participants will utilise the tools learned to develop effective policing strategies and prevent crimes in the coastal state.
“Intelligence gathering is a crucial aspect of policing that often leads to significant breakthroughs. Unfortunately, it is an area that is commonly overlooked. During my time as the Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of Intelligence in Lagos, I learned the importance of prioritising intelligence gathering in any policing environment,” Afolabi said.
He also commended the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, for his focus on intelligence and capacity building, referencing recent efforts to revamp the intelligence school in Ilorin.
Afolabi emphasised that training and capacity building are essential for achieving professionalism within the police force. In today’s complex security landscape, he said, timely and accurate intelligence is vital for preventing crime, maintaining public order, and fostering community trust.
He reiterated that intelligence gathering forms the foundation of effective policing, paving the way for operational efficiency and successful law enforcement activities.
