Senate sets up committee to oversee emergency rule in Rivers

The Nigerian Senate has established a 19-member committee to oversee the implementation of emergency rule in Rivers State, following the suspension of democratic governance in the state.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio announced the committee during plenary on Tuesday, stating that the upper chamber was taking necessary steps to match the oversight mechanism already established by the House of Representatives.

According to Akpabio, the committee will be responsible for monitoring the activities of the appointed Administrator of Rivers State and ensuring that the emergency governance structure operates within legal and constitutional bounds.

Senator Opeyemi Bamidele was named as the Chairman of the committee, with Senator Rufai Hanga, Deputy Minority Whip, serving as Deputy Chairman.

Other members include Senators Adamu Aliero (PDP, Kebbi), Osita Izunaso (APC, Imo), Osita Ngwu (PDP, Enugu), Kaka Shehu (APC, Borno Central), Iya Aminu Abbas (PDP, Adamawa), Tokunbo Abiru (APC, Lagos), Adeniyi Adegbonmire (APC, Ondo), Mohammed Sani Musa (APC, Niger), Simon Lalong (APC, Plateau), Asuquo Ekpeyong (APC, Cross River), Adams Oshiomhole (APC, Edo), Ireti Kingibe (LP, FCT), Onyekachi Nwaeboyi (APC, Ebonyi), Idiat Adebule (APC, Lagos), Ede Dafinone (APC, Delta), Mohammed Malamadori (APC, Jigawa), and Jimoh Ibrahim (APC, Ondo South).

Mr. Charles Bala was appointed as the Clerk and Secretary of the committee.

“If there is a need to review, it will be after further consultation with our colleagues,” Akpabio said. “But in the meantime, they have to get to work immediately.”
