Barrister Onyebuchi Ememanka, former Chief Press Secretary to ex-Governor Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia State, has officially resigned his membership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), citing unresolved internal crises and a wave of defections plaguing the opposition party.
Ememanka, in a letter submitted to the PDP Chairman in his Amasato Ward 3, Osisioma Ngwa LGA, Chief Chiemela Ufomba, and shared on social media Thursday, described the decision as “painful” but “inevitable.”
“A while ago, I submitted my letter of resignation of my membership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the Chairman of the party in my Amasato Ward 3, Osisioma Ngwa LGA, my dear brother, Chief Chiemela Ufomba,” the letter, titled “GOODBYE, PDP!”, read in part. “The decision, though painful, had become inevitable. It is a decision I took after very deep personal reflection and in consultation with my family.”
The former spokesman expressed disappointment over what he described as the party’s failure to regroup and restrategize after its defeat in the 2023 elections.
“After the 2023 election which we lost, my thinking was that the party will go into a review of the factors that led to the loss and restrategize for the future,” he wrote. “However, to my shock, the reorganization I looked forward to never happened. Rather, what I saw was a deliberate and consistent exodus of key members of the party into other parties.”
He criticized the mass defections, especially by long-time beneficiaries of the PDP, saying, “The most startling aspect was that people who since 1999 have benefited massively from the party… were the first to leave.”
Describing himself as someone with continued zeal for public service, Ememanka said the PDP no longer provided a viable platform for his political aspirations.
“As a young man, I still have a lot of fire in my bones. I still have a lot to offer our people… Remaining in the PDP will make that plan a mirage, at least, in the immediate future.”
On his next political move, Ememanka said consultations are ongoing but hinted at a possible switch to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), praising the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu.
“In the recent past, the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu has been impressing me with his deft and smooth political moves. Fingers crossed! So, there you have it, my people!” he concluded.
