‘Lack of forensic medical evidence limiting GBV survivors’ access to Justice

The Founder, Women at Risk International Foundation (WARIF),Dr. Kemi DaSilva-Ibru, has said the dearth of skilled healthcare personnel trained in obtaining information and necessary evidence needed to prosecute perpetrators of sexual and gender based violence is limiting survivors’ access to justice.

Da Silva-Ibru stated this in the Memorandum of Agreement between the Private Sector Health Alliance of Nigeria (PSHAN) and the Women at Risk International Foundation (WARIF) to equip health personnel with the required training to obtain forensic medical evidence from sexual and gender based violence survivor through the WARIF Forensic Medical Examination Awareness initiative through the adopt-a-healthcare facility programme of PSHAN.

“Obtaining forensic medical evidence from survivors is often a central part of the investigative and case-building efforts in sexual assault prosecution. There is a dearth of skilled healthcare personnel training in obtaining information and the necessary evidence needed to prosecute perpetrators in these cases. This often limits the survivors’ access to justice as well as the ability to access medical and psychological treatment and care.”

On her part, the Managing Director, PSHAN, Dr. Tinuola Akinbolagbe, said the collaboration marks a significant step in the shared commitment to improving health outcomes and addressing gender-based violence (GBV) in Nigeria.

She stated that PSHAN’s mission through the Adopt A Healthcare Facility Programme (ADHFP) directly impacts reproductive, maternal, and child health, creating healthier communities and empowering women and girls to lead better lives.

“By enhancing healthcare infrastructure and services, we create environments where women and girls can access the care they need, free from fear and discrimination. This empowerment is vital for preventing gender-based violence and fostering resilience and self-sufficiency within communities.

“The ADHFP also focused on community-based advocacy to ensure sustainability of interventions and ensure that Nigerians take greater responsibility for their health-seeking behaviour. PSHAN raises awareness and fosters a culture of support, we help communities become proactive in addressing health challenges and support victims of GBV.

“WARIF has been a beacon of hope for many, leading the charge in creating awareness and implementing programs to combat sexual and gender-based violence. Their focus on campuses and provision of essential post-care to victims and survivors have made a profound impact. Their work is crucial in our collective fight against GBV and in supporting affected individuals.

“This partnership between PSHAN and WARIF combines our strengths to provide comprehensive support systems that address GBV and enhance healthcare delivery. Our joint initiatives, including forensic training and community-based awareness programs, will ensure that victims receive the care and justice they deserve, while also working towards preventing such incidents in the future.”

Through the partnership, about 64 train-the-trainer health personnel have been reached with the goal to reach more and scale across Nigeria.
