The Insurance Industry Committee (IIC) has called on Nigerian motorists to take advantage of the benefits embedded in the third-party insurance scheme to reduce costs in the event of motor accidents in the country.
The committee made the call while flagging off a new industry’s title, ‘Third-Party Motor Insurance Works, Get It, Use It’, to deepen awareness of the policy across the 36 states of the federation.
According to the committee, the new campaign communicates the workability and effectiveness of the policy, encouraging motorists to buy the policy, use it and enjoy its inherent benefits.
The awareness underscores the industry’s commitment to the protection of policyholders, ensuring prompt claims payments, and making insurance work.
Speaking at the unveiling of the new campaign in Lagos, Head of Communication and Stakeholders Management Sub-Committee, Insurers’ Committee, Ebelechukwu Nwachukwu, said the campaign will run on radio, newspapers and social media platforms. This is to support the ongoing enforcement of the policy by the Police.
Nwachukwu, who is also the Managing Director of Rex Insurance Limited, said they aimed at creating a strong awareness, promoting the purchase of genuine insurance policies, and enhancing knowledge on the lodgment of complaints and policy verification.
She called on the public to utilise the opportunity created by the campaign to seek more knowledge on insurance and also share their experiences with the sector during the campaign.
While pledging the industry’s preparedness to resolve all issues about genuine claims, she called on Nigerians with unresolved issues of genuine claims to lodge their complaints through platforms provided by the National Insurance Commission (NAICOM)
She said the new campaign is jointly sponsored by the Nigerian Insurance Association (NIA), the Nigerian Council of Registered Insurance Brokers (NCRIB), and the Institute of Loss Adjusters of Nigeria (ILAN).
Also speaking at the forum, the Vice Chairman of the Sub-Committee and Managing Director, NSIA Insurance, Moruf Apampa, observed that there are still a lot of vehicles on the road without proper insurance. When accidents happen, it is often innocent people and public services that end up bearing the cost.
“This campaign is about helping people understand why insurance matters and making it easier for them to get covered,” he stated. To make compliance easier, he said Nigerians can now conveniently purchase or renew third-party motor insurance policies through the Nigerian Insurance Industry Portal (NIIP) online portal, or by visiting any registered insurance provider nationwide.
The NIID platform ensures transparency, instant verification, and peace of mind for all parties involved. Verification of your insurance policy can also be done online by visiting ASKNIID and inputting your car registration details.
Apampa called on the support of the media and other critical stakeholders in the insurance industry like CAMCONIA, which is the umbrella body of all Corporate Affairs Managers in the insurance industry, the sub-committee sough current and future collaboration in raising awareness about the benefits of the 3rd Party Campaign being embarked upon and the need to do all possible to change the narrative about insurance in Nigeria.
