Four injured as drunk driver crashes bus into streetlight in Ikeja, Lagos

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has confirmed that a commercial bus crash occurred over the weekend along the Alausa corridor in Ikeja, leaving four people seriously injured.

The incident involved a painted commercial bus with registration number KTU 69 YJ. Preliminary findings indicated that the driver, under the influence of alcohol, lost control of the vehicle and collided with a streetlight pole. The impact left several passengers injured, including a couple seated in the middle row.

LASTMA operatives stationed nearby responded immediately, rescuing the injured passengers—two men and two women—from the wreckage. They were given emergency care at the scene and later handed over to the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS), which transported them to the Trauma and Emergency Centre at the Toll Gate for further treatment. Other passengers were not seriously hurt.

Officers from the Alausa Division of the Nigeria Police Force secured the area during the rescue operation to maintain order and protect the crash site.

General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, condemned the driver’s actions, describing the incident as a consequence of reckless and alcohol-impaired driving. He reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to tackling such behaviour through ongoing education and enforcement, especially at motor parks.

“Our Monitoring and Surveillance Unit is actively engaging drivers across Lagos. We continue to emphasise our message: ‘Don’t Drink and Drive,’” Bakare-Oki said.

He expressed sympathy to the injured and wished them a full recovery.
