The Jigawa Council of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) has joined the global community in commemorating World Children’s Day 2025, a day set aside to promote and celebrate the rights and wellbeing of every child.
In a statement, the Council Secretary, Aisha Ahmed, reflected on the importance of safeguarding the future of children and drew the attention of parents, guardians, caregivers, and the society at large to the increasing vulnerability of children in today’s world.
She said children, being the most innocent and defenseless members of our society, are frequently exposed to various forms of harassment, abuse, exploitation, and neglect.
“We therefore urge all parents and guardians to closely monitor the movement and activities of their children, both within and outside the home, since the safety and wellbeing of children should be a top priority, and this requires proactive vigilance and continuous engagement.
It is our collective responsibility to ensure that no child falls prey to predators who seek to exploit their innocence.
“Furthermore, we strongly caution against the culture of silence that often follows incidents of child abuse and harassment. We call on parents not to cover up such cases out of fear, shame, or social stigma.
“Remaining silent only emboldens perpetrators and endangers other children. We encourage immediate reporting to the appropriate authorities and demand that justice be pursued diligently for the protection of all children,” she said.
Ahmed reaffirmed the council’s commitment to using the power of the media to amplify the voices of children, expose abuse, and promote policies that protect their rights.
“We call on all stakeholders – government agencies, civil society, traditional and religious leaders – to join hands in creating a safe, inclusive, and nurturing environment for every child in Jigawa State and Nigeria at large.
“Every child deserves to grow up in peace, with dignity, and free from fear,” she said.
