As part of activities to mark this year’s Children Day, Swansea University Alumni Nigeria has provided free medical services for over 1,000 residents in the Federal Capital Territory.
The medical outreach which held at Junior Secondary School, Apo Resettlement, Abuja also featured interactive sessions, medical consultation, screening, community outreach programmes for children and nursing mothers.
The scope of the medical services provided include health promotion, eye checks, malaria checks and distribution of malaria drugs and eye glasses, free dental health services, nutritional assessment among others.
Speaking at the event, the President, Swansea University Alumni Nigeria, Oyeinkediton Churchill, said the event was a testament to the alumni’s commitment to giving back and making a positive impact on the lives of young people in Nigeria.
While disclosing that this is a pilot project, the President said it would be replicated across the 36 states of the country.
Churchill said medical personnel from the National Primary Healthcare Development Agency, University of Abuja Teaching Hospital, National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Nigerian Red Cross Society and members of the association who are health personnel also joined in the outreach.
He said the association also received support from the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), FCT Universal Basic Education and other corporate organizations.
His words: “It’s a collective decision for alumni members around the world who deemed it fit to give back to the society, because we understand that a lot of people in Nigeria, we are not properly looking out for ourselves and our health. And so we all came together and agreed to carry out this outreach on Children’s Day.
“We want to see how we can help our children to grow up properly, and also to help our nursing mothers in order to make sure that they are well taken care of and given the right medications as well, because some of them, when they give birth, they don’t go through that normal procedures in order to live healthy, and then you have all of these complications afterwards”.
Also speaking at the event, Patron of the organisation, Engr Abdullah Buka, commended the Swansea University Alumni Nigeria for the initiative and commitment to empowering the next generation.
Engr Buka who graduated from the school five decades ago, expressed delight in seeing the current generation of students benefiting from quality education and opportunities, and praised the efforts of the alumni in bridging the gap and giving back to the community.
He called on other organisations to emulate the association’s community development initiatives, emphasizing the importance of partnerships and collaborations in driving positive change and empowering young people in the society.
Also, the Director/Principal, JSS Apo Resettlement, Victoria Nwogu, expressed her gratitude to the Swansea University Alumni Nigeria for choosing the school for the community development programme, noting that it would have a positive impact on the students’ academic and personal growth.
