FACT CHECK: No, the Nigerian Army Isn’t Promoting Islam Through a “School of Islamic Affairs”

A TikTok video that went viral last year was first shared by @immantion, has now been repurposed and was recently reposted on X by @Goziedragon007 on May 30, 2025. This has caused confusion and controversy online once more.

The 45-second video shows uniformed Nigerian Army personnel posing in front of a building branded “Nigerian Army School of Islamic Affairs.” In the video, @immantion can be seen saying, “The Nigerian Army School of Islamic Affairs. What’s happening here? What’s going on here? Can somebody explain to me? I don’t get it! What is going on within the Nigerian army? Is this country a movie or what?! Please, Nigerians! I honestly need an explanation to this. I don’t want you say that i’m confused because I can never be confused. I really need an explanation for this.”

What the Video Shows
The building in question is real. The Nigerian Army School of Islamic Affairs, located in Ikeja, Lagos, is a legitimate religious training facility for Muslim personnel within the military. It provides clerical and chaplaincy education to Imams who serve in the Army’s Islamic religious branch.

What the Video Omits
What the video does not show is that this school is just one of three religious training institutions operated by the Nigerian Army:

Nigerian Army Chaplaincy (Protestant) Training School – Yaba, Lagos

Nigerian Army Chaplaincy (Catholic) Training School – Ojo Cantonment, Lagos

Nigerian Army School of Islamic Affairs – Ikeja, Lagos

These schools exist to meet the spiritual and pastoral needs of soldiers across Nigeria’s major religions. They operate under the Army’s Directorate of Chaplain Services, which ensures faith-based support for personnel in a religiously diverse force.

Army’s Response

On July 8, 2024, when the video first surfaced, the Nigerian Army said the video made a futile effort to portray the force as exclusively encouraging religious bigotry among its personnel.

“Considering the gravity of this falsehood, the NA wishes to categorically state that this propaganda in its entirety is dead on arrival as it clearly does not reflect the values of our esteemed institution,” the Nigerian Army said.

“The Nigerian Army is a secular organisation that upholds the principle of religious freedom for all its personnel and ensures that personnel irrespective of ranks is free to practice their religions without any form of bias or endorsement of a specific religion.

“Our unwavering commitment to secularism guarantees that religious diversity is respected and accommodated, allowing soldiers to observe their faith without hindrance to their duties.”

Concultion: The video posted by @immantion and reshared by @Goziedragon007 is real, but the lack of context distorts public understanding of how the Nigerian Army supports religious diversity among its personnel.

Verdict: Misleading by Omission
