Okonkwo to mark 80th birthday with outreach, tournament

As part of events to celebrate his 80th birthday scheduled for September 6, 2025, the Presiding Bishop of The Redeemed Evangelical Mission (TREM), Dr Mike Okonkwo, will sponsor free cataract surgeries for not less than 500 Nigerians.

In a statement signed by the Chairman of the 80-anniversary committee, Rev Chinedu Nkere, said the surgeries will be conducted at the Eye Foundation Hospital in Ikorodu, Lagos, and are targeted at low-income individuals affected by cataracts—a leading cause of blindness globally. Registration forms are available at TREM’s International Headquarters in Obanikoro, all TREM branches in Lagos, or online via bit.ly/bmo500eyes.

According to the organisers, the initiative is aimed at restoring vision and improving the quality of life for underserved Nigerians in line with Bishop Okonkwo’s commitment to human development and social impact.

The free surgery campaign is one of several events scheduled to honour the revered cleric’s legacy of service. A major highlight is the 2025 Mike Okonkwo Annual Lecture, which will be held on September 4 at the Civic Centre, Victoria Island, Lagos. Former Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, will deliver the keynote lecture, while retired Major-General Ike Nwachukwu will serve as the chairman of the event.

The 20th edition of the Mike Okonkwo Football Tournament is also underway. The grassroots championship, featuring 36 male and eight female teams, will run from June 14 to August 30, with the final match scheduled to be held at the Yaba College of Technology Sports Complex, Lagos.
