Residents of Iyekogba communities in Oredo Local Council, Edo State, protested yesterday against the killing of a youth member, Mr Frank Osagie, over a boundary dispute.
The demonstrators marched to the Edo State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Secretariat in Benin City to voice their grievances.
The leader of the Iyekogba Elders’ Council, Mr Bright Uwafiokun, alleged that individuals from a neighbouring community shot Osagie during a confrontation over a boundary disagreement .
The protesters carried placards with inscriptions such as “Iyekogba Elders and Youths want justice for the killing of Mr Frank Osagie,” “Stop killing in Iyekogba communities,” and “Stop cultism in Iyekogba communities.”
Uwafiokun explained that the tragedy occurred on June 4 during a youth meeting at the Enogie Palace in Umegbe community, Ward 2 of Oredo Local Council. According to him, tensions had escalated following a complaint from Evbuorohun community regarding a boundary conflict with their neighbours in Okpebor community.
Efforts were made to mediate between the communities, with representatives visiting the heads of both areas. While initial talks seemed promising, the situation turned violent.
Uwafiokun recounted that on the day of the incident, youths from Okpebor community allegedly arrived at the gathering in three vehicles and, without provocation, opened fire on those present. Osagie, one of the victims, succumbed to gunshot injuries while being rushed to the hospital. Four others were reportedly injured and are receiving treatment.
The protesters condemned the attack, describing it as unprovoked and inhumane. Uwafiokun stated that while community members have been urged to remain calm, frustrations are growing among the youth.
“The murder and attempted murder are gruesome, wicked, and unacceptable. We demand justice. We urge journalists, police, and relevant authorities to investigate and ensure justice is served to prevent further violence,” he said.
Addressing the protesters, the Chairman of the Edo State Council of the NUJ, Comrade Festus Alenkhe, appealed for calm and patience. He assured them that their concerns would be addressed and justice pursued.
