The Renewable Energy Solution Providers of Nigeria (RESPON) has raised concerns over an advisory from the Federal Government warning Nigerians against rooftop solar panel installations.
The group said while it supports efforts to protect consumers from substandard products and unqualified installers, a general warning without clear guidelines could discourage Nigerians from adopting clean energy solutions.
In a statement signed by its President, Osaze Ize-Iyamu, RESPON said rooftop solar remains a vital solution to Nigeria’s electricity crisis and should not be dismissed outrightly.
The association acknowledged the importance of safety and quality but urged the government to focus on improving enforcement of existing regulations rather than issuing broad advisories that may create fear or confusion.
RESPON called on agencies such as the Nigerian Electricity Management Services Agency (NEMSA) and the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) to strengthen oversight and ensure that only certified professionals carry out solar installations. It also urged the government to promote certified training programmes and create a national registry of approved installers to protect consumers and professionalise the industry.
The group further emphasised the need for stronger market regulation, including action against counterfeit solar products and fraudulent operators. It called for more public education efforts to help Nigerians identify credible providers and quality equipment rather than relying on generalised warnings.
“Rooftop solar, when done right, is not a risk, it is a lifeline for millions of Nigerians,” Ize-Iyamu said. He added that RESPON remains committed to working with all relevant ministries and stakeholders to build a well-regulated, safe, and reliable solar energy sector in line with Nigeria’s Energy Transition Plan.
