Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State has appointed Super Eagles goalkeeper Maduka Okoye as an ambassador of the state, acknowledging his contributions to football and his plans to support youth development in the region.
The announcement was made during Okoye’s visit to the Lion Building on Tuesday, where he and the governor discussed initiatives aimed at leveraging sports for youth empowerment and economic growth in Enugu.
Mbah said the appointment followed Okoye’s expression of interest in launching a charitable foundation and establishing a football academy in the state.
“Today, I had the pleasure of receiving the Super Eagles and Udinese star goalkeeper, Maduka Okoye, at the Lion Building,” Mbah said. “A true son of Enugu, Maduka is not just making us proud on the national and global stage; he is also poised to give back.”
The governor confirmed that land would be provided for the academy project and invited Okoye to participate in the upcoming Enugu International Marathon.
“In recognition of his achievements and commitment, I’m proud to appoint him as an ambassador of Enugu State. He will serve as a role model to our children, especially those in our Smart Green Schools,” Mbah added.
In response, Okoye expressed gratitude for the reception and the appointment, describing it as a significant moment.
“I feel delighted to be welcomed home by the governor of Enugu State, His Excellency Dr Peter Mbah,” he said. “It was indeed a great and memorable moment we shared together, all in the interest of economic and sporting progress for the state and beyond.”
Okoye also commended the governor’s development efforts and expressed readiness to contribute to Enugu’s growth through his planned initiatives.
Born in Düsseldorf, Germany, to a Nigerian father and German mother, the 25-year-old has represented Nigeria 16 times. In the just-concluded 2024/25 Serie A season, he made 25 appearances for Udinese, helping them to a 12th-place finish.
