Anambra government condemns Ogboji killings

Governor Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra State

The Anambra State Government has strongly condemned the recent killings in Ogboji, a community in Orumba South Local Government Area.

On Monday, Ogboji was plunged into mourning when armed men attacked a gathering in the community, killing at least 13 people. According to sources, the assailants arrived in two SUVs and opened fire indiscriminately on residents who had assembled for their monthly general meeting.

In a statement dated July 1 and signed by the Commissioner for Information, Law Mefor, the government expressed deep sorrow over the tragic event.

“The Anambra State Government is deeply saddened by the recent killing of innocent lives at Ogboji, Orumba South Local Government Area. The government strongly condemns this dastardly act in the strongest possible terms and extends its heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims,” the statement read in part.

Mefor disclosed that preliminary investigations suggest the violence may have originated from an internal dispute. He also announced that the state’s police command has been directed to conduct a thorough investigation, identify those responsible, and bring them to justice.

The commissioner appealed for calm among residents and assured that the government remains committed to maintaining peace and security in the state.

“We urge all residents to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies to ensure the perpetrators are apprehended. We will continue to work tirelessly to maintain peace and security in our great state,” he said.
