RONIK Comprehensive School, yesterday, said that it had embarked on deliberate efforts to combine academics with sports and development to raise a new generation of students that could excel in all fields.
Vice Chairman, Board of Trustees of the school, Dr Adebola Olubanjo, stated this when he led a media team on a visit to The Guardian Rutam House Office in Lagos.
Olubanjo, who spoke during the meeting with The Guardian Acting Editor, Dr Wole Oyebade; Managing Editor, Chinedum Uwaegbulam, and Education Editor, Iyabo Lawal, said the school had set its sights on producing professional athletes for the country through its sports academy.
According to him, through the sports academy, the school will nurture athletes and also provide quality education to ensure the total development of mankind, giving young people the opportunity to develop and grow.
He said that the school’s effort in sports is yielding results, as one of their sports protégés, a 15-year-old SS2 student, Emmanuel Akolo, has won many laurels in recent times.
The vice chairman of the board said that due to his outstanding performance, Okolo was given a scholarship worth N5.4 million and is now in boarding school to concentrate on his academics and combine it with sport development.
He added that the student’s performance had encouraged more students to show keen interest in various sports activities, and to promote this, the school has provided facilities for football, basketball, swimming, and other sports.
Olubanjo said the school visited The Guardian to enable it to partner with the newspaper firm in education and learn from experienced professionals.
He commended The Guardian on its quality of education, enlightenment and entertainment reporting, adding that the Ronik Group, which includes a polytechnic, is working on establishing a Mass Communication Department.
Principal of the school, Victoria Duru, said the school was built for academic activities and sports, noting that the management believes that the interplay of academics and sports, with good character, makes a well-rounded individual.
Responding, Oyebade commended the school for its approach to building a total child by promoting sports activities alongside academic development. He said the school’s approach to providing different sports facilities for students is a total departure from others that fail to provide them.
Oyebade stressed The Guardian’s readiness to partner with the school in promoting education across all its platforms that include the newspaper, Guardian TV, and Guardian Digital.
