To address workplace bullying and promote wellness knowledge that will ultimately benefit students, the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND), through the Equality Development and Research (EDR) Centre, has empowered staff at the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike (MOUAU), with a specialised training program.
According to the facilitators, the initiative, which focused on equipping staff with essential skills to manage the Career Centre efficiently, will also enhance the effectiveness of the Career Service Centre at MOUAU.
Speaking, CEO of the EDR Centre, Marsha Nwanne, disclosed that the workshop aimed to empower Career Service Centre staff not only to improve their operational capabilities but also to foster a healthier, more supportive environment for students preparing to enter the workforce.
According to Nwanne, key components of the training included strategies for running the Career Centre effectively, identifying and combating workplace bullying, and promoting wellness and mental health awareness.
She emphasised the importance of the anti-bullying segment of the training. Noting: “Our team is being equipped to recognise bullying behaviours early and respond appropriately to mitigate their impact.
“This is crucial in creating a safe and respectful workplace for both staff and students.”
Also speaking, a wellness coach, Sarah Ugamah, who delivered part of the sessions, emphasised the critical need to imbibe strong values within the Career Service Centre.
She emphasised that embedding core values, such as integrity, empathy, and resilience, into the Centre’s culture is crucial for creating an environment that supports both staff and students holistically.
“Values are the foundation upon which effective career services are built. When staff embody these principles, they create a nurturing space that empowers students to thrive professionally and personally.”
On her part, Director of the Career Service Centre, Mrs. Osorochi Obi, expressed her satisfaction with the quality and relevance of the training.
“We are grateful to TETFUND for sponsoring this invaluable program and to the EDR Centre for their expert facilitation.
“The skills acquired will significantly enhance our capacity to support students’ career development and well-being.
“The training aligns with Michael Okpara University’s commitment to providing holistic support to its students, ensuring they are well-prepared for professional challenges ahead.
“By investing in staff development, the university continues to uphold high standards in career services and student welfare.
“This initiative reflects TETFUND’s ongoing dedication to strengthening tertiary education institutions in Nigeria through capacity building and resource provision, ultimately contributing to national development.”
