Southwest PDP dissociates self from opposition coalition

The Southwest caucus of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has dissociated itself from the recently formed coalition of opposition parties, declaring that it remains committed to the unity and structure of the PDP at both the zonal and national levels.

This position was contained in a communique issued after a meeting held on Friday at the PDP Zonal Secretariat in Ibadan, Oyo State. The statement was read by the Zonal Publicity Secretary, Sanya Atofarati.

According to Atofarati, the caucus was not involved in the coalition and urged members to remain loyal to the party and continue to support its leaders within the zone.

“The caucus states that it is not part of the reported coalition and urges all members of the PDP to remain united, steadfast, and continue to stand behind our leaders in the zone in navigating through all issues at the zonal and national levels,” the communique read.

A coalition of opposition parties recently agreed to adopt the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as their platform ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Prominent figures reportedly involved in the initiative include former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi, former Senate President David Mark, ex-Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi, and former Osun Governor Rauf Aregbesola.

However, the South-West PDP caucus reaffirmed its position within the PDP, noting that while the party is open to alliances with like-minded individuals, it has not committed to any new political arrangement outside its existing structure.

The communique supported the stance of the party’s National Working Committee, which has maintained that cooperation with others is possible but must align with the PDP’s goals and principles.

The caucus also expressed concern over recent federal actions affecting the region, particularly the withholding of local government allocations to Osun State. It described the withholding as unconstitutional and called for the immediate release of the funds, stressing that it impacts governance and the welfare of residents.

“The withholding of the state Local Government Allocation by the Federal Government is unconstitutional, unwarranted, and a violation of the rights and well-being of the people of Osun State,” the party stated.

Insecurity and economic challenges under the current All Progressives Congress (APC)-led federal government were also highlighted as ongoing concerns.

The caucus echoed comments by Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, who recently framed the 2027 general elections as a contest between Nigerians and the ruling APC, with the PDP positioned to lead that challenge.

The caucus expressed confidence in the PDP’s prospects in upcoming bye-elections in Ondo and Ogun States, as well as local council polls in Lagos.

It also commended Governors Makinde and Ademola Adeleke of Osun for their efforts in sustaining the party’s influence in the region.

The meeting called on Nigerians not to lose faith in the democratic process, urging citizens to rally around the PDP as the country prepares for another electoral cycle.
