As the governorship primary of political parties slated for between October and November draws near, the Ekiti State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has distanced itself from working with the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Recall that former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, Nasir El-Rufai, former Senate President, David Mark, and other prominent Nigerian politicians especially of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), recently joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in a bid to challenge President Bola Tinubu’s administration in the 2027 elections.
Also, several other leaders of the PDP are aligning with the Coalition ADC, while maintaining status quo, except some including Governor of Oyo State, Mr Seyi Makinde who vowed to remain in PDP in case of any eventuality.
This is just as the caucus of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Osun State has pledged to follow Governor Ademola Adeleke to any political party, fuelling his imminent defection from the party.
Speaking against these backdrops yesterday, the PDP spokesman in Ekiti Mr Jackson Adebayo said that Ekiti PDP has no pact with the ADC, but remain focus on the 2026 governorship election.
Speaking with the Guardian on Phone, Adebayo said though some chieftain of the party in the state have pitched their tent with ADC, he said the PDP remain unperturbed, saying that it is within their democratic rights to belong to political parties of their choice.
“The position of the Ekiti PDP is that we are still in PDP as of today, nothing has changed. We don’t have any relationship with the ADC.
“We are still very loyal to the party leadership at the national level and until they say otherwise, we remain in PDP and we are focus on the coming party primaries coming up sometime in October.
“Although, few of our leaders are already in ADC, we believe it’s within their democratic rights to belong to any political parties of their choice. In political parties, there is free entry and free exit.
“For the majority of our members, the idea of coalition with ADC is a distraction from the task ahead which is the 2026 governorship election.”
