Four individuals have been sentenced by two Kwara State High Courts sitting in Ilorin for offences related to internet fraud. The convictions were delivered on Monday, July 14, 2025, by Justices Mahmud Abdulgafar and Sulaiman Akanbi.
The convicts — Olaitan Abdulwahab Damilare, Maruf Quadri Kolawole, Habeeb Abiodun Jimoh, and Mubarak Moruf — were arraigned by the Ilorin Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on separate charges involving cheating, impersonation, and obtaining money under false pretences.
According to court proceedings, Damilare, Kolawole, and Jimoh appeared before Justice Abdulgafar, while Moruf was arraigned before Justice Akanbi.
The EFCC stated that Damilare used the alias “Fav” to impersonate a white woman and convinced a victim named Michael to send him $2,100 in gift cards in January 2024. Kolawole was charged with impersonating “Frank Matt” on Facebook to defraud a man identified as Philip Solomon of 950 Australian dollars in February 2025.
All four defendants entered guilty pleas to their respective charges. Prosecuting counsels Aliyu Adebayo and Mustapha Kaigama presented the convicts’ extra-judicial statements and items recovered at the time of their arrests as evidence. These included mobile phones, laptops, and various amounts of foreign currency.
Justice Abdulgafar sentenced Damilare to six months’ imprisonment. The court also ordered the forfeiture of $2,000, an iPhone XR, and a Samsung phone to the federal government.
Kolawole was also sentenced to six months’ imprisonment, with an order forfeiting his iPhone 13 Pro and $950 to the federal government.
Jimoh received the same six-month sentence. His iPhone 14 Pro Max, an HP laptop, and $365 were also forfeited.
Justice Akanbi sentenced Moruf to one year imprisonment or an option of a N400,000 fine. His iPhone 15 Pro Max, iPhone 7, and $300 were ordered forfeited to the federal government.
The EFCC said the convictions are part of ongoing efforts to combat cybercrime in the region.
