Nigerian scholar Habeeb Abdulrauf wins prestigious teaching award in U.S. university

Nigerian-born academic, Habeeb Abdulrauf, has emerged as the recipient of the 2024–2025 Departmental Graduate Teaching Effectiveness Award at Western Michigan University (WMU), a distinguished honour reserved for graduate instructors who exemplify excellence in teaching, innovation, and inclusive learning practices.

The award, presented by WMU’s Graduate College, stands as one of the institution’s highest accolades for graduate-level educators. Abdulrauf, who is currently an instructor at the university’s School of Communication, was celebrated at a formal ceremony where he received the award from respected scholar and mentor, Dr. Julie Apker.

“This award is more than a plaque,” Abdulrauf shared in a heartfelt message on his LinkedIn page. “It’s a reflection of a calling I hold close to my heart: teaching with intention, compassion, purpose, and inclusion. For me, the classroom is a space where students are seen, heard, and challenged to grow beyond their expectations.”

Abdulrauf’s teaching portfolio includes critical undergraduate courses such as Human-Machine Communication, Communication and Community Engagement, and Small Group Communication. Known for his dynamic and student-focused approach, he has been lauded for creating inclusive learning environments, designing interactive lectures, and bridging academic content with real-world issues. One of his standout contributions includes his independently developed lecture, AI as Co-Intelligence, inspired by Ethan Mollick’s work.

“I strive to make each lesson feel like a dialogue, not a monologue,” he said. “Every student deserves to be addressed by name, and every session should spark curiosity.”

Abdulrauf’s academic research lies at the intersection of artificial intelligence, social robotics, and communication — a fusion that informs his teaching style and mentoring philosophy. He attributes much of his pedagogical growth to the guidance of Dr. Bryan Abendschein, Director of Graduate Teaching at WMU. “His leadership has transformed how I view the classroom — less as a stage, more as a collaborative space of discovery,” he noted.

His recent recognition further cements the growing influence of Nigerian scholars in global academic circles, particularly in communication and educational innovation. Through his work, Abdulrauf continues to inspire students and peers alike, affirming that excellence truly knows no borders.
