HURIWA urges military to reward exemplary conduct

The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has commended the Nigerian Armed Forces for their recent gallant performance in internal security operations, especially the outstanding acts of integrity by operatives who rejected bribes and arrested terrorists in various parts of the country.

In a statement issued by its National Coordinator, Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko, the civil rights advocacy group applauded the troops for their courage and professionalism, describing their actions as a testament to the high moral standards within the Nigerian military.

HURIWA particularly praised troops of Operation Safe Haven who, according to the Defence Headquarters (DHQ), rejected a ₦13.7 million bribe offered by terrorists during a military operation in Plateau State. The troops had responded to a distress call regarding terrorist activity along the Jos-Sanga Road and intercepted a bullet-riddled vehicle. Two suspects in the vehicle reportedly attempted to bribe the soldiers in exchange for their release.

Major General Markus Kangye, Director of Defence Media Operations, disclosed this during a press briefing in Abuja, outlining recent military operations across the country. He said the suspects were arrested, and weapons, ammunition, and cash were recovered.

“In spite of the tempting bribe of ₦13,742,000, the soldiers remained resolute and arrested the suspects. Investigations are ongoing,” Kangye said.

In a related development, HURIWA welcomed the military’s arrest of two members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) in Borno State for allegedly transporting arms and military uniforms intended for terrorists. The arrests followed intelligence-led operations in Liya, Biu Local Government Area.

“These profoundly satisfactory developments show that the military is home to men and women of unimpeachable character who uphold the highest ethical codes,” said Onwubiko.

HURIWA called for the establishment of a transparent reward and recognition system within the Armed Forces, recommending that soldiers who demonstrate exceptional conduct be awarded merit certificates and considered for accelerated promotion.

The group further proposed that such individuals be nominated for national honours and rewarded with housing provided by the federal government or private philanthropists, in recognition of their service to the nation.

“This is the kind of integrity and commitment that should be publicly honoured. These soldiers are not just defenders of the nation—they are symbols of hope in the fight against corruption,” HURIWA stated.
