The Ogun State Government has constituted a state burial committee to coordinate official arrangements for the funeral of the late Awujale and Paramount Ruler of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, GCON, who passed away on July 13 and was buried the following day.
A statement released by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Tokunbo Talabi, announced the formation of the committee, which is tasked with organising government-led burial programmes in consultation with the royal family and key stakeholders.
The committee held its inaugural meeting on Thursday, July 17, where discussions focused on aligning state activities with the expectations of the royal household and traditional institutions. According to Talabi, who also chairs the committee, “members of the family of the late Kabiyesi were in attendance, and the committee has resolved to work closely with them to ensure that the planned activities reflect both official protocols and traditional expectations.”
The committee is also preparing for high-level attendance at the funeral events, including the anticipated presence of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR.
“Given the stature of the late monarch, the committee is mindful of national interest in the proceedings,” Talabi added.
Representatives from traditional councils, the regberegbe groups, and Ijebu development associations are included in the committee alongside government officials. The composition reflects efforts to blend state responsibilities with cultural and community considerations.
Oba Adetona reigned for over six decades and was widely regarded as one of Nigeria’s most influential traditional rulers. The committee’s work will culminate in a series of state-led tribute activities, to be held on dates to be announced.
