Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele has assured Nigerians that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) remains committed to delivering better governance and national development, following the defection of four senators from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Speaking during plenary on Wednesday, Bamidele described the move as a sign of increasing confidence in the APC. The defectors include Senators Francis Fadahunsi and Olubiyi Fadeyi from Osun State, and Akon Eyakenyi and Aniekan Bassey from Akwa Ibom State.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio read their defection letters on the floor of the Red Chamber.
Bamidele congratulated Akpabio, APC leaders in both states, and President Bola Tinubu, stating that the development strengthens the party’s commitment to “re-engineer its philosophy” and deliver on its promises.
“This is not just about numbers. It’s a call to work harder, to ensure Nigerians enjoy a better lease of life,” he said.
Senator Fadahunsi stated that he was aligning with the APC to contribute meaningfully to national growth, citing unresolved PDP crises, court cases, and a leadership vacuum as reasons for leaving the party.
“The people are yearning for the dividends of democracy—good roads, quality education, healthcare, and jobs. I can no longer serve effectively under a fractured PDP,” Fadeyi stated.
Senate President Akpabio formally welcomed the new members into the APC family.
