Gunmen raze houses in Kogi community

Assailants suspected to be of Bassa and Fulani descent, on Saturday, attacked a the Idochie community in Oganenigu Ward, Dekina Local Government Area of Kogi State, razing at least 10 houses in what eyewitnesses have described as a communal clash.

According to sources cited by Zagazola Makama, the gunmen, armed with AK-47 rifles, stormed the area around 5:00 p.m., firing sporadically and forcing residents to flee into nearby bushes for safety.

Eyewitnesses reported that the gunmen looted properties and torched several households, including a Jincheng motorcycle and other valuables, though four buildings, among them a mosque, were spared from the destruction.

A 45-year-old community member who is a local farmer and vigilante, Adamu Bala, narrowly escaped the assault and provided a firsthand account.

“No life was lost during the attack, but the destruction was massive. They set fire to people’s homes and took whatever they could carry,” Bala recounted.

The local farmer added that he recognized one of the assailants as a known individual from the Bassa community.

Security sources told Makama that they are making efforts to restore normalcy in the area.
